Response to Select Committee inquiries into complaint handling and Ombudsman remit

We welcome the announcement that the Public Administration Select Committee will be conducting an inquiry into complaint handling.  As Parliament’s Ombudsman - independent of government and the NHS - we have a unique perspective and can use what we learn from the complaints we investigate to spot themes and to make recommendations for change to the complaints system.

We are here to help the committee in any way we can in order to achieve better outcomes for complainants and to improve public services as a whole. We also welcome the inquiry entitled Parliament’s Ombudsman Service which seeks to establish what remit it needs to best serve both the public and Parliament. We believe that change to our legislation is necessary to enable us to have more impact for more people and we will set that out in our evidence to the committee.
