Chapter 1: Hospital, Community Health and Ambulance Trusts

Case No.  E.2452/99-00Delay between out-patient appointment and surgery

Complaint against: Havering Hospitals NHS Trust

Summary of case

Mrs B complained that her husband had an excessive wait, after an out-patient appointment, before exploratory surgery, in November 1998, revealed that he had cancer.  The Ombudsman upheld the complaint to the extent that Mr B waited fifteen rather than twelve weeks.  The Trust apologised, especially for not having explained earlier to Mrs B that an administrative mistake had caused part of the delay.
