Selected Investigations Completed December 2000March 2001 > Part I, Case no. E.252/99-00
Complaint against: Central Manchester Healthcare NHS Trust
Summary of case
Mr S complained about the level of supervision and care which was provided to his adult son who was found dead in May 1997, three months after his discharge from the Trust’s day centre. Although the Ombudsman found that there was a lack of notes about some aspects of Mr S’s son’s contact with staff at the Trust, he did not uphold the complaint. The Ombudsman upheld Mr S’s complaint about the handling of his complaint, and criticised the Trust for telling Mr S that there would be an independent review of his complaint and then retracting the offer. The Trust apologised and agreed to ensure that duty psychiatrists would make notes of their telephone conversations with patients, and that those notes would be inserted in patients’ records. The Trust also agreed to provide evidence that they had ensured that complaints staff were aware of the provisions of the complaints procedure
