Complaint against three GPs in the Medway Primary Care Trust area
Summary of Case
Miss K complained that Dr A did not adequately manage her diabetes. The Ombudsman did not uphold that aspect of her complaint. In 1999, her legs became infected and she complained that Dr A and Dr B would not look at them and said that Dr A had reapplied dirty dressings. The Ombudsman partially upheld the complaint but only to the extent that Dr A had reapplied the dressings inappropriately. She welcomed Dr A’s apology and assurance that he had changed his practice on wound dressing and recommended that clinical staff should be reminded of the importance of appropriate wound dressing. The practice removed Miss K and her son, Mr K, from their list and they did so by writing to Miss K and Mr K together. The Ombudsman partially upheld the complaint to the extent that Miss K and Mr K should have been notified separately but found the removal to be otherwise reasonable. She recommended that the practice develops a written protocol on removal. Miss K said that receptionists at the practice breached her confidence by discussing matters with her sister, Mrs Y. The Ombudsman was unable to reach a finding on that aspect of Miss K’s complaint because there was insufficient evidence. She criticised Dr A and the practice manager for overlooking Miss K’s complaint about that matter at an earlier stage but commended them for taking the opportunity to remind staff about confidentiality generally as a result of the alleged breach.
