13. Case No. C.858/99
Child Support Agency: severe delays in collecting child support maintenance
After making a maintenance assessment promptly in November 1993 the Child Support Agency failed to act on warnings from Mrs W that the non-resident parent was failing to pay her the correct amount. As a consequence they lost touch with him, he having twice changed address in the meantime. Eventually they secured payments by imposing a deduction from earnings order in April 1997, by which time substantial arrears of child support maintenance were owed. Following the Ombudsman's intervention the Child Support Agency paid Mrs W ex gratia payments of £7,615.74, representing the whole of the arrears and compensation for loss of use. They also made a consolatory payment of £150 for gross inconvenience, £150 for stress, and reimbursed out of pocket expenses of £20.
