LAND REGISTRY
Failure to handle a complaint properly
Mr A said that the Land Registry (LR) had given him wrong information about the ownership of a piece of land adjacent to his property. By the time LR later gave him correct information about the ownership he had incurred costs in connection with the clearance and cultivation of the land. He complained to LR and asked for compensation. LR paid him part of the sum he had asked and increased their compensation offer on two subsequent occasions. During the correspondence LR failed to make clear to Mr A their complaints procedures and how they worked; to explain at an early enough stage the basis of their second offer of compensation; and to deal promptly with one particular letter from Mr A. The Chief Land Registrar apologised for those failures.
